7 Common Mistakes: Installing Window Moulding

Window mouldings can dramatically enhance the look of your home, but installing them correctly is crucial. There are some big mistakes to avoid when installing window moulding!

1. Choosing the Wrong Material

While this can mean aesthetically too, you want to ensure the window moulding material you choose will suit your climate. In humid environments like the Gold Coast, moisture-resistant options like polystyrene window mouldings are the best choice for durability.

Installing window mouldings is a great DIY job, but your material should also be easy to work with. A lightweight option like polystyrene window mouldings is best for DIY work.

2. Ignoring Aesthetic Proportions

Aesthetic proportions can make or break your window moulding designs. Larger windows require a more substantial window trim, while ceiling height can affect your options for moulding profiles.

You should aim to create a visual balance. Window mouldings come in all shapes and sizes, but that doesn’t mean they all suit your windows!

3. Improper Measurement Techniques

When measuring your window mouldings ready for installation, check once, twice, and again before cutting your material.

A crucial error most people make is not accounting for window frame depth and existing trim. Hot Tip: professionals recommend adding a 10% buffer to your material for any cutting errors.

4. Neglecting Surface Preparation

Without proper surface preparation, your DIY job will not be long-lived! Remove old caulk and paint, repair any wall damage, and ensure surfaces are smooth, clean and dry before you start any installation.

5. Poor Fastening Methods

Fasting methods ensure longevity in your window mouldings, which can lead to obvious gaps over time if not done properly.

Space your fasteners evenly – we suggest every 40cm – and consider using adhesive and nails for heavier window mouldings. A nail gun can get you a professional finish, but whichever way you get them in, just ensure the nails are the right length!

6. Improper Caulking Techniques

Caulking (or sealing) your window is an important step that we see people underestimate too often. Go for quality here, and choose a paintable caulk. Apply it in smooth, continuous beams along all joints and seams.

Remember to smooth the caulk immediately and allow sufficient drying time before painting.

7. Skipping Primer and Paint Prep

ALWAYS prime your window mouldings before painting! Sand smooth any imperfections and select high-quality, water-resistant paint that can withstand the environment around you.

By avoiding these common mistakes during installation, you can instantly elevate your space with professional-looking window mouldings. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to contact a professional who can guide you through the process and help out.
