How to Install Expanded Polystyrene Mouldings: Our Step-by-Step Guide

At High Profile Architectural Mouldings, we’re seeing expanded polystyrene (EPS) mouldings become an increasingly popular choice for Australian home renovations and interior design projects.

The reason for their popularity is simple!  Expanded polystyrene mouldings are lightweight, cost-effective and easy to install.

In this step-by-step guide, we will walk you through the essential steps for how to install expanded polystyrene mouldings.  From how to prepare your space to our top tips for that professional finish, read on for all you need to know.

Why Choose Expanded Polystyrene Mouldings?

Before we launch into the installation process, it’s helpful to understand why expanded polystyrene mouldings are a great choice for your home project.

Lightweight and Easy to Work With

EPS mouldings are much lighter than traditional wood or plaster alternatives, making them easier to handle and install (especially for DIY enthusiasts)!

Cost-Effective

Compared to plaster and wood, EPS is a budget-friendly option that gives you the same visual appeal at a fraction of the cost.

Durable and Moisture-Resistant

Expanded polystyrene is moisture-resistant.  This makes it ideal for high-humidity areas like bathrooms or kitchens.  As well as high-humidity climates (like right here on the Gold Coast)!

Versatile Designs

Browse our range and you’ll quickly find that EPS mouldings are available in a wide range of designs.  From simple trims to ornate crown mouldings, you can choose the perfect style for your home.

Step 1:   Starting Your Project!  Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before starting the installation process, make sure you have the necessary tools and materials on hand.

Here’s a quick rundown of what we recommend you have on hand:

  • Expanded polystyrene mouldings
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Mitre box and saw (for cutting the mouldings at an angle)
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Polystyrene moulding adhesive (such as acrylic-based adhesive or polyurethane glue)
  • Caulking gun
  • Painter’s tape
  • Caulk (preferably paintable)
  • Paint (optional, for finishing)
  • Paintbrush or roller, your choice

Step 2: Measure and Plan

Accurate measurements are key to ensuring your EPS mouldings fit perfectly.

Start by measuring the area where you plan to install the mouldings.

Use a measuring tape to determine the length of the walls or ceilings, and make note of any corners or angles where cuts will be necessary.

For crown mouldings, remember to measure the diagonal distance where the wall meets the ceiling. This will help you properly cut the mouldings to fit snugly against the corners.

Step 3: Cut the Mouldings

Once you’ve measured your space, it’s time to cut your expanded polystyrene mouldings to the appropriate lengths.

We recommend you use a miter box and saw to make precise cuts, especially if working with corners.

For inside corners, cut the moulding at a 45-degree angle so that the two pieces fit together seamlessly.

For outside corners, you’ll also need to cut at 45 degrees, but in the opposite direction to create a clean joint.

HPAM Tip: Before making the final cuts, it’s a good idea to test fit the mouldings against the wall or ceiling to ensure they align properly.

Step 4: Sand the Edges

After cutting the mouldings, gently sand the edges with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots.

This will help the mouldings fit more snugly together, especially at the corners.

HPAM Tip:  Be careful not to over-sand, as this can affect the moulding’s shape.

Step 5: Apply Adhesive

Now it’s time to adhere the expanded polystyrene mouldings to your wall or ceiling.

Using a caulking gun, apply a thin bead of adhesive to the back of the moulding.

Be sure to choose an adhesive specifically designed for EPS, as some glues can damage the material.

Press the moulding firmly into place, starting from one end and working your way along the wall.

HPAM Tip:  Use painter’s tape to temporarily hold the moulding in place while the adhesive dries.

Step 6: Caulk the Joints

Once the adhesive has dried (follow the manufacturer’s recommended drying time), it’s time to caulk any gaps between the mouldings and the wall or ceiling.

Use a paintable caulk to fill in the joints where two pieces of moulding meet, as well as any small gaps along the edges.

Smooth the caulk with your finger or a damp cloth for a clean, finished look. And, allow the caulk to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 7: Paint the Mouldings

If you’re planning to paint your expanded polystyrene mouldings, now is the time.

EPS mouldings come in a white or neutral finish, but they can easily be painted to match your décor.

HPAM Tip:  Use a high-quality paint that adheres well to EPS material.

Apply a coat of primer first if needed, followed by two coats of your chosen paint colour.

Use a paintbrush or roller for a smooth, even finish. Be sure to let each coat dry thoroughly before applying the next.

Step 8: Final Touches

Once the paint has dried and the mouldings are securely in place, remove any painter’s tape and clean up the area.

Step back and admire your work! Your new expanded polystyrene mouldings should now enhance your space with a polished, professional look.
