Window Trims: A Beginner’s Guide to Painting and Restoring

On the Gold Coast, your window is a statement and extremely important when you want to soak up the sunshine.

But, there’s nothing worse than a window trim that needs a makeover. From cracks to faded paint jobs, here is our beginner’s guide to restoring your window to its former glory, one window trim at a time.

How to Paint a Window Trim

A paint job is one of the easiest (and most cost-effective) ways to transform your window trim.

Here is our 5-step guide;

Step 1: Use Tape!

Don’t be mistaken, even some of the best painters can stuff up straight lines. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so before you start, tape off the border between your window trim and the wall and glass.

Step 2: Prepare the Window Trim

Every paint job requires good preparation. Before you pick up your paintbrush, have a good look at your window trim and patch any minor cracks or holes.

Step 3: Sand your Canvas

This is one of the most important steps when painting your window trim.

Smooth the surface by sanding (and don’t forget to dust away the debris once you’re done).

A 150-grit sandpaper will give you the best paint adhesion.

Once this has dried, use a wet cloth to thoroughly clean the space.

Step 4: Primer

We highly recommend you use a primer before putting on that first paint coat.

Most window trim materials will be adhesive enough to skip the primer step, but for a long-lasting job, primer is the key step.

Step 5: It’s Time to Paint

Congrats, it’s time to paint your window trim now!

We prefer to start from the inside edge and then work your way out toward the wall.

Repeat with a second coat and remove the tape immediately once this is done.

If you’re unsure of the dry time for the paint you’re using, check the instructions on the tin.

We recommend using high-quality latex or acrylic paint, but you should always talk to your paint professionals first.

Past the Paint Job Point?

Sometimes, our window trims have passed the point where a paint job can return them to their former glory.

And, sometimes, our window trim style doesn’t match our home anymore.

Either way, you’ll know when it’s time to install a new window trim.
