Doric columns appear stout, with no base and often have vertical lines which create symmetry and elegance. These columns were first seen in 7th century BCE making it the oldest style of column. They’re simplicity and enormity make it one of the most commonly used and beautiful architectural columns. Doric columns are often placed together in proximity making a repetitive pattern which draws attention to the buildings.

Ionic

Classical, Renaissance and Neoclassic are architectural styles which complement ionic columns traditional sophisticated design. They are easily recognisable due to their volute situated at the top of the column, the spiral embellishment which imitates a spiral shell design. They often have delicate designs including egg and dart patterns which weave between the volutes at the top of the column.

Corinthian columns are an ornate fluted column developed in Ancient Greece. The most complex and intricate of the three columns, the Corinthian order is distinguished by three volutes and a slender sleek design. The capital of a Corinthian style column is embellished with gorgeous intricate floral designs.

Features of columns

Columns traditionally provide buildings with additional structural support. In today’s modern era with the help of technological advancement buildings no longer rely on columns for support as the structural systems are often hidden within walls of buildings and beams that run along ceilings and walls. Although columns are still visible in large infrastructure such as high rises or large commercial buildings. However the  element of class and sophistication they bring to any building still makes them a popular to this day. If you’re looking to add a bit of character to your homes exterior or you feel as though your commercial building is looking a bit plain and boring then be sure to consider installing architectural columns.
