Exterior Cornice Moulding

Enhance your homes curb appeal with exterior cornice mouldings

Have you ever looked at your house after coming home from a long day at work and thought to yourself “there’s something missing”. Maybe it’s a long-awaited upgrade or the finishing touch to your renovations. Well, exterior cornice mouldings might just be the answer to all your problems. They have the ability to add a subtle but powerful element of design to any home no matter the size, style or location.

Why does your home desperately need exterior cornice mouldings?

Despite the obvious need for cornices to provide your homes exterior with protection from damage caused by rain, hail and general wear and tear, cornices enhance your homes curb appeal. The name is derived from the Italian word cornice meaning ‘ledge.’ Exterior cornices act as a sophisticated and elegant trimming which wraps the surrounds of your home, providing an aesthetic appeal. They can be used above windows and doors although they usually sit beneath the roof and adjacent to the wall of your home’s exterior. They provide a somewhat streamline effect which adds class and an element of design to any house making it feel more like a home.

Types of cornices

Cavetto cornice

Cavetto cornices are an ancient Egyptian architectural cornice which use cavetto mouldings. These are a type of concave moulding which has a sleek curvaceous quarter-circle design. This design can also be referred to as an ‘Egyptian cornice’, ‘hollow and roll’ or a ‘gorge cornice’, used mostly in architecture which reminisces traditional Greek, Egyptian, Italian and ancient Iranian styles.

Box cornices

Box cornices mimic a long narrow box which runs along the trimming of buildings. They are used on rooves which are relatively steep. Most commonly, the width of the eave is narrow, however, there can be wide box cornices which are used on eaves which are wider and the roof has a gentle slope.

Bracketed cornices

Bracketed cornices appear differently to box and cavetto cornices as they are not a streamline cornice. Rather, they are multiple cornice brackets which run along the eaves of the building. They come in a large array of designs to suit the style of your home and can be embellished with floral or delicate designs.
